Beginnings and endings

So I'm finished with another summer. And what a quick summer it was. As fast as it came after the academic year, it left and another semester began. But it was rewarding and a good summer with lots of growth and development. I got to go to airborne school and jump out of a plane a couple of times. Then I got to spend some time with family for a week or two. I was also able to make it to Ryan and Tabb's wedding, which turned out to be a mini BFA reunion as well. That was probably one of the best parts of the summer. And finally, I spent the last 5 weeks doing my west point leadership detail, where you take charge of some incoming freshmen and lead them through their summer training. That was challenging and rewarding at the same time. A good experience overall. And now I'm into the academic year. It's already looking busy, but I'm finally able to get into my major and hopefully avoid the more mundane classes that I've been used to in the last two years. That's my life recently in a paragraph. Here's something that I re-discovered in a notebook recently.

Did you know your fate was upon you?

As the arrow left the hand,

Did you wish to have been somewhere else?

Than fallen on that bleeding ground?

Did regrets of a life lived wrong

Prey upon your final thoughts?

Did you shed a tear for your lost plans

As you cursed our fallen lots?

Did you think of those around you?

If they would miss you when you're gone,

Did your life's deeds flash before you

As you wondered what you'd done wrong?

Did you feel pain,

Gasping for your last breaths?

Or did you feel peace...

From living life with no regrets?

Wedding!

Okay, so I am now the second oldest Laughlin child as my oldest sister is now MRS. Sarah Salajka! That's crazy cool. I had to jump through some major west point hoops in order to get to go to the wedding, but with a great amount of hassling and finagling I was finally able to get my pass approved and tear out of here.  Then I was stuck in New York City traffic for way too long to make my flight time comfortable.  I also had to fight the people at the airport as they didn't want to let me on my flight, twice.  The first hurdle was that I was apparently too late to check in, my response? ..."I'm going to catch this flight because it has thirty minutes left and it's ridiculous to not be allowed to check in at this time!" Problem solved.  So that got me to the front of the security line and up to the gate where I had to get my boarding pass.  The second hurdle was that as I step up to the counter, the guy in front of me received his pass and was told that he got the last one.  So I roll up my sleeves and prepare for a brawl that I'm sure will happen when they tell me I can't get on the plane; I would definitely fight the man who cut in line to take my ticket.  As they announce the flight as closed, I walk up and tell them that I have to get on the plane as it is the only way to catch the short layover in order to head over to my sister's wedding.  That, presented with the case that they were letting on passengers for the next flight before they had boarded all of the ones for the first flight was a sufficiently convincing argument. So the guy let me board as some seat mysteriously materialized out of thin air.  I know that God was behind all of the travel arrangements from when I applied for my special pass up to the point that I made my layover in Detroit though, because I don't know any other way that the trip could have come so close to not happening so many times and yet still make it through.

I had a great time visiting with family as we prepared for the wedding and reception.  Most all of the cousins and relatives were there from our family and Peter's family (the groom).  Now we (my sister's and I) had all heard that the "Borat" movie was hilarious, and so we decided that it would be fun for the bridesmaid's and groomsmen to go and see it...very bad choice.  It ended up being so crude and offensive that we walked out halfway through it.  We all felt pretty violated after that, so the girls went home to watch a chick flick while the guys hung out and played X box for a few hours.  I definately suck at gaming.

The actual wedding day was pretty crazy, it went from frantically trying to decorate the reception area, to finding a gift, to getting changed, to running around to find the items missing for the tuxedo, to waiting around for a few hours while everyone showed up for the ceremony, to taking pictures rather than heading straight to the reception (I was all about the food, but I guess a bride needs her pictures of the actually wedding), to spending the rest of the evening eating, dancing and socializing.  So I was fairly tired by the end of all this.

Sarah wanted me to wear my uniform at the reception, and I couldn't turn down the bride, especially not when there were so many young ladies around. gotta do what I can to make an impression :) lol.

Wow, it's only two weeks until my sister is MRS. Sarah Salajka.  That's sort of a crazy thought.  Big changes no doubt.  I'm pretty thrilled though.  I got to spend a weekend with Sarah and Peter two weeks ago down in DC.  It was a great time.  If anyone want's suggestions for getting from new York to DC for dirt cheap, talk to me, or look on Google, there are some good deals for buses.

I just got back from seeing Saw III.  I am ashamed to say that I got suckered into watching that piece of trash movie.  I don't think that I've ever been so disgusted with a movie in my life.  If there was ever a definition of something loaded with needless graphic imagery with absolutely no edifying content, I'm pretty sure that movie would be it.  I was amazed that people would make something so ridiculously awful.  And the fact that the entire crowd coming out of the movie theatre was fairly agitated and swearing gave me some clue that other people shared my dislike for the waste of money and time that we had both just been scammed into.  I was only watching because my buddies bought the tickets for the movie while I was trying to find some place to eat.  I definitely would not recommend the movie to anyone.  Ha ha! That's the second crappy movie that I've had to watch in the last two times that I've been to a theatre simply because "The Departed" has been sold out both weeks.

This photo was a random moment of me wearing someone else's sunglasses on a cloudy day.  I guess that's the mark of really good sun glasses, when people don't even need the sun as an excuse to wear them.

I really liked this picture that I took.  Perhaps some people recognize the location.  I think the picture has great symmetry and all that.  Good times.

So since it's been a decent portion of eternity since I updated last, I'll just give a recap and not go into too much detail.  So wow!, summer is over and it's almost fall... that was fast.  To recap, after finals and the whole week after that when we had to wake up at four in the morning to do drill practice (marching on a grass field in a square for hours in the most uncomfortable uniforms imaginable and in the most rigid stance possible, yeah, "kinda sucks" is an understatement) and after the two hour long graduation ceremony which President Bush was the speaker for, we were finally released to enjoy our two weeks of vacation... for the summer. That's right, two weeks for your summer to make up for a year of 18 hour days filled with gruesome studying, painful physical practices, and the annoying west point traditions of treating the freshmen like dirt.  So, I hear you asking, "How jeff, how could you ever make up for a whole year of deprivation in merely two weeks?" Well, I'm about to tell you how. This is the summer break to end all summer breaks, so read on and take notes. lol.

First: Visit family and relax in Minsk Belarus. My goal was to recooperate and spend some great quality time with my family whom I had not seen since Christmas. Some cool things that I can remember are: having dinner with the American defense attache (a west point graduate who could relate to what I had gone through the first year) and then coming back to my family's house to find that the KGB had broken in and gone through the computers for incriminating information, that was kinda interesting, I got to have lunch with the American ambassador to Belarus (also set up by the west point grad. attache) which was interesting since I was the only one at the table not drinking wine for the toast (because I didn't know if the west point grad would remember that west point doesn't allow freshmen to drink), and finally, speeding to the airport at a hundred miles an hour because our other car broke down on the way.  Yeah, that was great, I turned a 3 hour drive to lithuania to catch my flight, into a 1 and a half hour ride of a lifetime. Kids, I do not endorse speeding, it's very bad, never do it. (Yes, I'm a hypocrite).

From family time in Belarus I transitioned to party time in Kandern Germany with friends. What a blast. If I didn't write anything else it would be just as good as trying to put crumby words to an unexplainably amazing time.  If you weren't there, I'm sorry for you, but you can make up for it by being at bfa's next graduation. So some highlights from my week (five days) at bfa: spending time at Sonne!, camping at salzenburg (flaming effigies, yeah!), spending time with best friends from the awesome class of 2005 and other wonderful people who graced us with their pressence, being present for the graduation of some awesome sonneknights and others (i love anyone who graduated and just was not able to live the dream of being at sonne), having some good times at German pubs watching the world cup, swing dancing with the alumni (sorry leah for dropping you on your back:), spending time at the kandern pool, (doesn't get any warmer), meeting up with some great staff friends, running in the mountains again, and overall having an amazing time. So it came down to the point where everyone started going home and I was staying for the rest of the week, and what do I do? Take another trip, five countries is not enough in a week. So what do I put together in one day of frantic planning? That's right, a trip to Scotland!

From the scenic black forest area I took a mad serries of transportation routes to make it to Glasgow, Scotland to hang out with Rebecca.  No joke, one day I call her up and mention the idea of taking a cheap flight (ryan air ladies and gentlemen: it worked for me!) to visit for a few days, and the next morning at 5 AM I am catching a ride with Adam and his dad (thanks Adam and Mr. Dunham!) to the airport to take a bus to another airport so that I can fly to another airport and take a train to a place where I can take a bus from to finally get to my destination. So I got to spend three days (actually two half days and one full day) visiting Rebecca in the awesome city of Glasgow.  I got to know the city real well because she had to work during the day, so I was able to spend hours walking around taking pictures. It was an interesting time as I felt bad trying to spend as much time with Rebecca as I could in my short stay, while she had to balance a guest and a working schedule. But the trip was definately worth it. Something different to do before heading back to two solid months of miltary training, yeeeah!

So that concludes my amazing two weeks of summer vacation, from which I went straight back to the sucky heat of a west point summer training experience. I don't think that xanga would let me post the novel I would have to write to recount my adventures from Cadet Field Training, better known to cadets as bucknam or bucknanistan. Basically, we spent two months out in the woods rucking, going to firing ranges, learning land navigation, first aid, close quarters combat, room clearing, and generally being awesome in all aspects. I got to blow down doors, set off claymore mines, fire a tank, ride in a helicopter, fire heavy weapons including an automatic grenade launcher, and overall learn a ton about tactics and techniques in the military. Just to let whoever is now thinking "that sounds fun, i'll do that" know, the cool stuff that you get to do is about 10 percent of the picture, the other 90 percent is sleeping in the rain, getting sick/stung by umpteen trilion bugs, sweating untill you have no more water to sweat, waking up at four in the morning and doing nothing until noon, and dealing with countless other areas of frustration and not getting to do anything about changing them. But it is a great experience; it builds character.

So I'll quickly recap the 6 days of break that they gave us at the end of summer training, I used the time to visit relatives and go to Houston for B'linda's wedding.  I flew down to Muskogee OK to visit grandparents and spend some time with my sister Sarah who was making wedding preparations for her November wedding, and with my mom who was helping out with the wedding planning.  I then used the last day to fly down to Houston to see B's wedding. Now the thing is, Brett (marcos) and I had been told different times for the wedding, but since he was in houston before me, I assume that he knows the right time. Well, we show up to the wedding about five minutes late and everybody is already in the chapel, so we agree to just sneak in the back with our gifts.  So as we are about 10 feet from the chapel doors, out come B'linda and Elliot, who had just been married. Some awkward moments of bewilderment on both of our parts gave way to the revelation that the wedding had actually been scheduled for thirty minutes earlier making us the losers who try to walk in as the ceremony ends. Yeah, we both felt pretty worthless and stupid, but we made up for it by actually making it to the reception before that was over. Good times. It was worth it though, quite a lot of bfa'ers showed up (most of them on time) so it was a great little reunion/celebration.

And then I came back to school and the good times were over. Until next year...

Who needs a title?!?!?

Sadness... I've only got two more days with family in Minsk before leaving. Happiness...I've only got two more days until I see friends in Germany! So bittersweet. Perhaps that's why heaven is heaven, because it can be a place where you are surrounded by everybody you love,... I guess that thought continues to imply that we are sharing Christ with everyone we love because we want them to share in the life that God gives.  Sometimes I surprise myself.  So in my tenuous stay in Europe this time around I've discovered a few things:

1. No car rental agency will allow someone under 21 to rent (most stick with 25).

2. The European fad of pointy shoes, similar to the castle fool or jester, is ridiculous and bestows the look of foolishness upon whoever wears them.

3: While many Americans think the Euro is bad, let me enlighten them, it's a good thing, just try to get around multiple European countries outside of the EU,... then you can raise a hand when you realize that too many different currencies is a bad thing.

4: Input your own enlightening thoughts about Europe here.            Other than that, not too much happening. I feel like I've gained a ton of weight, a result of exercising not at all, eating too much at home and at guest's houses, and getting a lot of sleep.  Although nightmares have begun, typical for a week before traveling. I dream about missing flights, not being packed, and being back at school.  So I guess we'll wait and see what fun travel stories come up in the next post.  dasvidania, and aufvietersehen. (English spelling)
